A BIG HAND FOR CARNIVAL PAYOUT

Despite Carnival Week getting off to a soggy start for the Procession the payout from this year’s Carnival in August was over £14,000.

A Presentation Evening was held yesterday in the Main Hall of the Clacton County High School when donations totalling £14,173 were handed over to representatives from over 40 organisations by the Carnival Princess Charis Curtis.

There were 2 main charities who received monies from the Carnival procession; Clacton and District Occupational Workshop received a cheque for £1,500 which they will use to replace their old greenhouses and the Special Autistic Support Group who received a cheque for £1,000 which they will be using to fund their Annual Show at the West Cliff Theatre in January.

Two other large cheques were given to organisations who work in partnership with Carnival:  Clacton Lions received a cheque for £1,169, their 50% share of monies raised from the joint venture of producing the Carnival Newspaper and 1st Clacton Scouts who take on the catering for 3 major events and they received a cheque or £1,154, 50% of the profit.

Donations were also made to Colchester Institute and TCVS for the use of Gainsford Avenue Sportsground and West Road Car Park respectively.  Other donations ranged from £150 to £400.

Carnival Chairman, Alan Wiggins, thanked all the organisations and sponsors for their invaluable help and he said “without you all, Clacton Carnival Week would never happen.  The success of our Carnival is involving many organisations to help us run Carnival Week, manning sideshows, marshalling etc. who then in return get a share of the profit.”

At the end of the evening, Alan Wiggins was given a standing ovation after he was thanked for his hard work and dedication over his 30 years as Chairman of the Carnival Association.   Alan will be standing down as Chairman in November at the Association’s Annual General Meeting.
